Rhode Island Food Culture: Dining, Drinking & Food Stuff

As the weather warms up, we start to get to that part of the state a lot. We lived down that way for a short while and have eaten in many of the well known Newport spots. What are some favorites that maybe are not as well known (especially from those of you that live down that way)? Have heard very interesting chatter about Le Central in Bristol (a San Francisco chef/restaurateur who just moved east). Also someone just mentioned the Rhumbline.

Salvation cafe in newport is excellent, laid back atmosphere and the food is great with an ever changing menu. The Boathouse in tiverton, excellent view of the Sakonnet river and excellent food. Also Pour Judgement in Newport has some really good food with a pretty expansive beer menu. Plus they have a burger and beer combo for $8, a good deal in my book.

I know Salvation and the Boathouse well. Never heard of Pour Judgment. Will look it up. Thanks.

I saw an advertisement for "Elizabeth's Newport Cafe" on the www.restaurant.com site...says she serves nice fish boulliabaise for two, and some other types of large platters using fresh herbs, etc. I bought one of those $25 dollars off the dinner certificates for the requested $10...so, I'll be trying it soon I hope, and also, it's a BYOB place...bring some good wine. If anyone has been there, please give me a heads up!

I've always been intrigued by Elizabeth's but never been. If I understand it correctly, she only serves dinners "for two", so you and your dining companion have to agree on the choice. A big reason I've always been intrigued is her slightly OTT self-description:

"This charming Victorian decorated Welsh / English country style dining room was created by Elizabeth Burley. A natural entrepreneur who had businesses in many countries of the world has created Elizabeth's Café to be an eventual franchising concept. Elizabeth's is now the hottest eating spot in Newport! All of her customers have been amazed at the astounding consistency of her food and the business boosts a 90% repeat easting spot in Newport, including very, VERY notable celebrities. People come from all over the globe to partake of a feast for the gods. And the eclectic Victorian dining room is a feast for the eyes as well. The ambient music can be Sinatra, Pavarotti, Miles, Ella, or Mozart.
Elizabeth is a master of blending fabulous flavors and textures not to be found anywhere else… period. Elizabeth has created everything and uses her own intuitive approach. The food is not cutesy-cutesy nouvelle cuisine. It is completely unique.. country… earthy.. and unquestionable delicious. The house, special, Bouillabaisse ala Elizabeth, takes over the entire table and is a sight to behold."

Might be some truth to it though, as she's been open a long time despite my not knowing a single person who's ever been.

funny, I too was intrigued with her self-description. I will be trying it soon, as I previously posted, I bought one of those certificates on restaurant.com. It should be interesting, to say the least. I'll report back...

I have eaten at both Persimmon and Le Central.Persimmon is cutting edge greatness and Le Central is solid high quality Bistro Cuisine. I would suggest both in an instant.

The Boathouse in Tiverton is very good, not great.....but the setting will always keep me coming back. Beautiful & comfortable, some of the best outdoor seating in RI. Even the indoor seating has an outdoor feel (huge windows that open wide, etc).

I agree about the Boathouse. The views are great...the food is OK, not great. And it amazes me as to how limited the bar selection is. For example, Don Julio is the only tequila. It's tasty, mind you, but why not more than 1? Salvation Cafe has good food and a fun atmosphere, especially when the back room/patio opens up. I enjoyed Tucker's Bistro (a few doors down from Salvation) for French fare...was dissapointed with Le Central in Bristol. Persimmon: awesome, in a word. Also be sure to check out DeWolf Tavern in Bristol. Good food, lotsa wood. The place on the water that replaced Goff's doesn't look much better menu-wise. I didn't eat there, but I stopped to check the menu out. And go to Roberto's in Bristol for good Italian food and a nice wine selection. Newport: Rhumbline was the biggest dissapointment of all: mediocre food, high prices, boring decor...but that was 2 years ago. Asterisk is still one of my favorite places to eat in the state and they have an amazing bar..best espresso martinis in RI! 22 Bowens is excellent, but not inexpensive. Going to Fluke in Newport this weekend...will keep you posted. And finally, if you're considering Tiverton, go to Westport instead. Do a tasting at the winery...maybe a beer at Buzzard's Bay...then go to the Back Eddie for a fantastic meal on the water. (And they know how to make a drink!) and the next morning, come back to Adamsville to have breakfast at the Barn!

Alz, I agree! I cannot think of a better summer day than a few hours spent on the beach at Horseneck, followed by a tasting at Westport (probably the best winery in NE), then dinner at the Back Eddy....begun w/a mojito on the back deck.

Mamma Luisa on Thames Street is to me the best in Newport. Authentic Italian with care. Great wine list. Pasta Beach second best in Newport. Casual, genuine Italian made by Italians with work visas. Restaurant Bouchard best French but a special occasion restaurant. Black Pearl best chowder. Tito's in Middletown great for a Mexican lunch.
