Rhode Island Food Culture: Dining, Drinking & Food Stuff

Here we are, living in Rhode Island, the Ocean State (state motto: "Roads? What roads?") and I'm trying to discover where are the best places to get really good if not great fish and chips -- not a "fish sandwich" with fries on the side. Nope. Fish and chips. The fresher the better, the tastier the better.

Any advice? Suggestions? Recommendations? Warnings?

I'm not into fancy fish and chips, just a simple dish that shouldn't be over-handled.

If you are staying in Providence then go to the Ivy on Hope Street. Seriously they have awesome fish and chips. Fresh oil, fresh fish, and I've seen them pour a nice helping of Narragansett beer in their batter mix.

If you want take a drive to Narragansett then head to Champlin's. Stay clear of George's.

I'll second the Ivy. The portion was way too much for me to eat in a sitting, but the batter was light and flavorful and the fish was moist and tasty.

At the risk of eliciting a collective and dismissive harumph from all the hardcore foodies out there, I'd recommend the yeoman-like fare done at Legal. Simple food, carefully and--perhaps more importantly--consistently done well (at least in Boston). Does it bother me that they're a chain? Nope, not a whit.

precisely. i'd take a diligent third-grader armed with an accurate thermometer and frialator, regularly changed oil and fresh fish over 'inspiration' any day, especially when it comes to something like fish 'n' chips.

I've had fish and chips at one place here in RI...Georges. I was so glad I worked out that morning. It was the only way I could carry the greasy platter to my table. One bite and we tossed it. If you ever get to NYC there's a place called "A Salt & Batter'y" on Greenwich street. They have awesome fish and chips.

Our goal was not to create another place for people to get hit with a one way information flow, but to start a dynamic, group conversation about food culture in Rhode island by all who are passionate about it. Bon Appetite
