I'm....Waitin' for the Cart....

Channel some Lou Reed:

We got some hot dogs-
We got some onions-
Got some relish and we put it on some bu-uns-
I'm... waitin' for the cart.

I'm talking about the Chez Pascal hot dog cart. I know it's still February, but it's sunny, warm, and I'm done with dirty snow and pot-holes. I want to sit in the sun, feel the breeze, listen to the creak of the swings and the wobbly sounds of ice cream trucks.

And I want the dogs.

That's all.

The Unstoppable Shellfish Kick

Is anyone else experiencing this? I got oyster's from the Matunuck Oyster Farm table at the Farmer's Market back in December, and it's been a Saturday tradition ever since. Maybe it's the way the steamer's, clam's and oyster's look, all laid out on the ice. There's something very rustic and rugged about all of it. Fine, I'm not actually out there harvesting these things, and yeah, Perry Raso, the Oyster Master (I have no idea what his title is) at Rhody Oysters probably see's more real work in a… Continue

What to Drink on Election Day

Okay, so I’m obsessed. This election has consumed my life and I can’t wait until it’s over. My husband and son can’t wait until it’s over. Hell, my dog can’t wait until it’s over! I’m sure I’m not alone in this. So, because lately, in the words of Vic Chesnutt, I’ve been a bit of a half-assed activist, and in an effort to lighten the mental anguish I’ve been enduring, I’ve decided to put together a list of libations for election night, depending on your political persuasion and the outcome of th… Continue

The Best Beverage is Portuguese

Fatima Pereira is passionate about wine. As the owner of Best Beverage, a local wine distributor, she exudes enthusiasm for all of her products. Her portfolio is made up of wines from around the world, including California, Italy, Spain, and South America, (having tasted many of these, I can attest to the fact that Fatima knows her stuff) but it’s clear that Portuguese wines hold a special place in her heart. Her experience with wine began when she was a child in Portugal. In the summerti… Continue

Thank you so much for the sweet comment! I'm totally new to this Providence Palate site and my muddled brain can't figure it out tonight. Trying to see if you've got a blog too? I'd like to subscribe! All I can see are your posts on here, and they're making me VERY excited about the bounty of new regional foods to try once I move up there next month...

Hi Andrea - It is real ricotta cheese. I'm actually not a vegan myself (my co-blogger & sister is) so my recipes include dairy, and seafood once in a while. I love cheese and totally support your Michael Pollan philosophy! Enjoy & thanks for the comment! - Sarah

Those were most likely "Johhny Blues" from a company in Maine called JP Shellfish. If you'd like to sample some of our mussels (also harvested in Maine), you can find them at all of the Dave's Marketplace stores, Champlin's Seafood, and on the menu at most restaurants in the state. Also, if you'd like to come down to our plant in Davisville (Quonset Point), I'll gladly give you a 2# bag "on the house". Let me know.

How's the job going? Mine is good. Winter farmer's market starts this Saturday, so you'll find me there all winter!

Ahhh I didn't recognize you from the photo, but of course! Yeah we were at Rich's but between our 17-month old tripping on everything possible as she staggered past her bedtime to our 3.5 year old's bouts of "that's mine" with any number of toys... it was pretty hard to actually get a conversation in edgewise! So we'll have to talk more at some point soon! I've had the Palha-Canasred and yes that was really good, forgot about that, but thanks so much for all the other great tips in our price range. Have you had Quinta de Pancas from Estremadura as well? Really good.
