I've had fish and chips at one place here in RI...Georges. I was so glad I worked out that morning. It was the only way I could carry the greasy platter to my table. One bite and we tossed it. If you ever get to NYC there's a place called "A Salt &…

I'll second the Ivy. The portion was way too much for me to eat in a sitting, but the batter was light and flavorful and the fish was moist and tasty.

Profile Information

Favorite Restaurant in Rhode Island
Gracie's -- OK so my wife is the Pastry chef there but the food is great and the service outstanding! Nick's -- we go there most Sundays for brunch and Derek does a fantastic poached egg-potato/fennel cake thing! We're also fond of another neighborhood place, Broadway Bistro. Great food, warm and engaging service, and a cozy place to chill out.
Favorite Place for Dessert
Anything my wife makes -- after that Pastiche
Favorite Cheap Eats
Trinity Brewhouse
Your favorite shop or market
Chinese-American Mini Market in Cranston
Condiment you can't live without
Crystal or Frank's hot sauce

Chez Pascal and New Rivers for Restaurant Weeks

While the two words "restaurant weeks" stumbles off the tongue, these two places are shining examples of what makes this food event so incredibly good. We tried Chez Pascal last week and New Rivers just last evening and can claim without hesitation that $30 bucks a person for such wonderful food should not be missed. Skip Boston and NYC is just not worth the travel headaches when you have such food venues right here.

You can read my review notes on Chez Pascal,… Continue

Rhode Island Food Bank

Look, I don't need to say much about this place -- at the very least it deserves a little of your time and maybe a little of your money; certainly some of your food. Anyway, I've dropped food off at their HQ on Niantic Street
in Providence twice now and have to say their front desk -- the front line so to speak -- is staffed by the friendliest, nicest people you'll probably ever meet in this life.

They also have a great website: http://www.rifoodbank.org/matriarch/default.asp. Give them a hand… Continue

New Rivers

This place has been around for nearly 20 years and is still offering the same incredibly delicious food and outstanding service.

Located along Steeple Street, literally a stone's throw from the hubs of Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design, New Rivers, run by Bruce Tillinghast and his phenomenal chef Beau Vestal, this place feels like a slice of rural France brought to the Ocean State.

If you think Susie and I liked this place you would be absolutely right. And obviously lots of o… Continue

Aperitifs, aperitivi and more

Although there's a noticeable slowdown in restaurant activity during the middle of the work week, a number of restaurants downcity still manage to draw a few interested parties in search of expanding their knowledge of wine.

On one recent Wednesday night my wife and I dropped by Gracie's -- well, OK she was just turning around and going back -- and spent a pleasant hour or so chatting with Anter Thakur, the resident wine guru, about a couple of wines he's suggesting for Thanksgiving: a chardonn… Continue

Tini's

Tini's is the latest concept from George Germon and Johanne Kileen, owners of Al Forno in Providence, and one of the driving forces behind the city's incredibly successful food revolution.

Quick review: space a bit cramped, the starters were quite good (ask for the french fries' sauces on the side), service friendly but sloppy, and the electronic menu we found discomfiting and tiresome after the first ten minutes.

Long-winded review: Wedged between Gracie's at one corner and Brav… Continue

I first had Myrons Yakatori? sauce on noodles at a blugrass festival years ago and when i saw it in a store I found out who distrivuted it and got some for the restaurant. It is a soy based sweet and hot sauce that you can use on just about anything I do....

Hi Steve, It was great meeting you last night as well. And thanks for the kind comments on the Best Beverage post; I really appreciate it!
The Z-Bar tastings are the 4th Thursday of each month. I don't organize them, so whatever is being poured on any given night is a mystery.

Steve, thanks for the kind words. I too enjoyed the evening and your company as well. The Ivy is located on Hope Street, on the same block as Pizzico and Blaze. They are closed on Sunday in the summer. How about a Providence Palate meet up at the Ivy? I live around the corner for there and love it.

Steve: It was a pleasure meeting you and Susan. I just reviewed your Siena site and it is chock-full of great tips. I'll make a point of forwarding the link to anyone traveling to Italy. Look forward to seeing both of you again...maybe in Newport. Best, - Tony

steve, thanks so much for your kind words. its that positive energy and honest feedback that fuels my passion to keep producing the food that we do everyday. it takes a lot of energy and hardwork to bring it all together but its all worth it when we can make our guests that happy, noticing the efforts of our integrity. cheers.

Steve, Hope all is well with you and Susan. I was at Loie Fuller's the other night and imagined that dining in your hood is pretty good.
